What Is the Telugu Varnamala?

The తెలుగు వర్ణమాల (Telugu Varnamala) is the complete set of letters that make up the Telugu script — one of the oldest and most beautiful writing systems in the world. Telugu is a classical Dravidian language spoken by over 80 million people across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Telugu communities worldwide. Recognised by the Unicode Consortium in block U+0C00–U+0C7F, its rounded, flowing characters are instantly recognisable and unlike any other script.

At Telugu4Toddlers, our mission is to make the తెలుగు వర్ణమాల accessible and joyful for every learner — whether you are a parent introducing a toddler aged 2–6 to their mother tongue, a child just starting school, or an adult beginner picking up Telugu for the very first time. Every letter, vowel, and consonant is presented with audio, visuals, and games so that learning always feels like play.

The Building Blocks of the Telugu Alphabet

Vowels – అచ్చులు (Achulu)

The Telugu vowel set — అచ్చులు (Achulu) — contains 16 vowels, beginning with the short అ (a) and ending with ఔ (au). Each vowel has a standalone form you learn first, and a vowel marker (matra) used when it combines with a consonant to form a syllable. Mastering the Achulu is the essential first step in reading Telugu words. Our Vowels page presents each Achuvu with its sound, an example word, and a fun illustration — perfect for little learners starting from scratch.

Consonants – హల్లులు (Hallulu)

Next come the హల్లులు (Hallulu) — 36 consonants arranged into traditional vargas (families) based on where the sound is formed in the mouth. Groups are headed by sounds like క (ka), చ (cha), ట (ṭa), త (ta), and ప (pa). Once you know Hallulu, the next steps are ఒత్తులు (Vothulu) — conjunct consonant forms — and then గుణింతాలు (Guninthalu), where vowel markers combine with consonants to produce the full syllable grid. This progression mirrors exactly how Telugu is traditionally taught in schools across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Explore every consonant interactively on our Consonants page.

Fun Ways to Learn the Telugu Alphabet

Telugu Rhymes for Kids – పద్యాలు (Padyalu)

Rhymes are one of the most powerful tools for young learners. Our curated Telugu rhymes weave Achulu and Hallulu naturally into sing-along verses, helping children absorb letter sounds and rhythms long before they can read independently. Research consistently shows that phonological awareness through song accelerates early literacy — and Telugu folk rhymes have been doing exactly that for generations. Head to the Rhymes page and start singing today.

Interactive Alphabet Games – ఆటలు (Aatalu)

Our interactive alphabet game turns letter recognition into a rewarding challenge. Kids tap, match, and identify Telugu letters at their own pace, building confidence with every correct answer. According to the Omniglot Telugu reference, the Telugu script supports over 1,000 distinct character combinations — our game makes learning them manageable and fun, one letter at a time. Jump in on the Play page whenever you are ready.
